A marine protected area (MPA) is a place where some activities are restricted to allow marine life to thrive.
MPAs have different types of regulations. Some prohibit all types of fishing or collecting, while others may allow some of these activities. In California, there are few MPAs that are closed outright to the public – most can be enjoyed through swimming, snorkeling, diving, and other water sports.
